The Cleveland Clinic describes stress as “a normal reaction the body has when changes occur, resulting in physical, emotional and intellectual responses.” Stress responses are designed to help an individual adjust to new situations. They are useful as they can help an individual remain alert, motived and prepared to avoid danger. Stress can produce unwanted symptoms when stressors persist without an individual experiencing periods of relaxation or relief. When a person experiences chronic, long-term stress he or she is at increased risk for developing adverse physiological effects. There are behavioral, physical, and emotional signs and symptoms that can manifest as a result of prolonged stress. The Mayo Clinic provides the following examples:
Physical symptoms of stress:
Aches and pains
Weakened immune system
High blood pressure
Emotional symptoms of stress:
Behavioral signs and symptoms of stress:
Overeating/ developing an eating disorder
Engaging in risky behavior (e.g. unsafe sex)
In situations where chronic stress is left untreated it could lead to a variety of unwanted health complications, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and/ or obesity.
What Is Fatigue?
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines fatigue as “weariness or exhaustion from labor, exertion, or stress.” Fatigue can manifest as physical, emotional, and/ or mental symptoms. Common symptoms of fatigue, provided by Medical News Today, could include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following examples:
It is not uncommon for symptoms to worsen after exertion. Fatigue can develop as a result of other mental health issues, such as eating disorders, anxiety, stress, grief, emotional exhaustion, boredom, and/ or life changing events (e.g. divorce, moving, etc.). An individual that experiences chronic and debilitating fatigue may have a condition known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome.
The Treatment Process
The treatment process for stress and fatigue will include many adjustments to one’s lifestyle. There are a plethora of mental health strategies that can be used to effectively navigate and alleviate stress and fatigue. The treatment process will be different for each individual. Customized treatment plans could include a variety of different psychotherapeutic approaches and some individuals may also benefit from medication. Through treatment individuals will learn tactics for recognizing warning signs of stress and fatigue, prior to their development, which can be invaluable to one’s prolonged recovery. Further, individuals in treatment for stress and fatigue will learn to integrate healthful lifestyle choices (e.g. exercising regularly, obtaining ample sleep, eating nutritiously, engaging in mindfulness practices, etc.) into their daily routines, as well as learn effective stress-management strategies, and beneficial coping mechanisms.
